You can make your own SL Welcome Mat, or take apart the scripts, see how they work and learn from it.
That's how we started once too: in-world and out-world we picked up scripts, offered by the community and study them by taking them apart. Our hard disc filled itself quit fast and a few months later we already had a nice collection of useful day to day scripts, some special-purpose, some educational and some just snippets.
