Coded in Country proposes to utilize the expensive experts to train, mentor, and supervise talented junior developers in low-income countries, rather than paying those experts to build the software themselves. While this may take slightly longer and even cost more initially, the result is strengthened capacity by increasing the number of local, skilled software developers with expertise in the relevant eHealth packages. This will result in lower total cost of ownership as future development, modifications, and support can be provided locally.

Ultimately, Toward the Sentient City argues against a techno-determinism that cedes overwhelming agency to new technologies and either champions or laments their projected impact on urban life. Rather, the exhibition examines the relationship between ubiquitous computing, architecture and the city in terms of the active role its citizens might play – or neglect to play – as both designers and inhabitants, in the unfolding techno-social situations of near-future urban environments.

Over the past several years, as the Architectural League has become increasingly involved in exploring the proliferation of various types of ambient, mobile, and ubiquitous computer technologies, we have often been asked, what does this have to do with architecture?

This workshop aims to explore the movement from designing for experience as interaction with technology, towards designing for reflection on felt-life experience captured by technology. Affective sensors, simulated environments, life-logging and autobiographical memory technologies offer powerful ways to capture such life experiences.
